Therapeutic Approach

At Rae Of Hope Counselling, my work is grounded in the person-centred values of Carl Rogers. I believe that every person has the capacity for growth and healing when met with empathy, genuineness, and unconditional positive regard.

My role is to walk alongside you, offering a warm, accepting, and authentic presence as you explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. I provide counselling for children, teens, and adults, including those who are neurodivergent. Each session is tailored to your unique needs, creating a safe and nurturing space where you can connect with your inner strengths, deepen self-understanding, and foster emotional wellbeing.

Child Counselling

Child counselling provides a gentle and supportive space where children can safely explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences through play and creative expression.

I work in a child-centred way, adapting each session to meet individual needs, including for neurodivergent children. Together, we help children make sense of emotions and experiences that may be hard to express in words, building emotional awareness, confidence, and resilience in a space where they feel seen, heard, and valued

Teen Counselling

Teen counselling offers a safe and understanding environment for adolescents to explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences.

Using a person-centred and creative approach, I help teens express themselves in ways that feel natural and meaningful. I have experience supporting neurodivergent teens and adapt my approach to suit different communication styles and needs. Together, we explore challenges such as anxiety, low mood, self-esteem, identity, family issues, or other difficult experiences, supporting growth, self-awareness, and emotional resilience.

Adult Counselling

Adult counselling provides a warm, non-judgemental space to explore thoughts, feelings, and life experiences at your own pace.

Grounded in person-centred values, I offer an empathetic and accepting environment where you can feel heard and understood. I also support neurodivergent adults and tailor sessions to your preferred ways of processing and communicating. Together, we can gently navigate challenges including anxiety, low mood, grief, identity concerns, trauma, relationship or family issues, and times of change, fostering greater self-understanding, connection, and balance.

Creative Therapy

Creative therapy provides a gentle way to explore emotions and experiences through art, play, and other forms of expression.

This approach can be particularly helpful for neurodivergent individuals or anyone who finds creative or non-verbal forms of communication more comfortable. I work alongside clients to support their process of understanding and integrating thoughts and feelings, fostering confidence, emotional resilience, and overall wellbeing.

TESTIMONIALS

"This therapy has helped me heal parts of myself I didn’t even know were still hurting."

Joanna created such a calm and supportive space where I felt completely safe to open up. Her person-centred approach helped me explore and understand the impact of my childhood experiences. Over time, I’ve started to rebuild trust in myself and feel more grounded, confident, and able to move forward.

"I finally feel understood."

At first, I really didn’t think counselling would help me. I was nervous about talking to someone and thought they’d just tell me what to do or try to “fix” me. But Joanna was completely different — she actually listened. She didn’t judge me or make me feel weird for how I was feeling. It was more like having a safe space where I could finally be honest about everything.

Over time, I started to understand myself better and notice how my thoughts and feelings connect. Joanna never pushed me — she let me go at my own pace, and that made it so much easier to open up. I’ve learned how to cope when things get tough, and I feel so much more confident and calm now.

If you’re a teen who feels lost or just needs someone to really get you, I’d honestly recommend trying person-centred counselling. It’s made a huge difference for me.

"Joanna has made such a difference to our child and our whole family."

When our child first started seeing Joanna, they were struggling with anxiety, low confidence, and finding it hard to express their feelings. From the very beginning, Joanna made them feel safe, listened to, and accepted.

Her calm and caring approach meant our child could open up in their own time and start to build trust. We’ve seen such positive changes — more confidence, better communication, and a happier, more relaxed child.

As parents, it’s been a huge relief. Joanna’s person-centred support has helped our child reconnect with their strengths and believe in themselves again. We’re so grateful for her kindness and understanding.
